CS Signs Performance Contracts with MITI SAGAs, Urges Push for Local Industry and Job Creation

The Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry, Lee Kinyanjui today signed Performance Contracts with Chairs and CEOs of State Agencies (SAGAs) under the ministry, kicking off a renewed drive for national economic delivery.
The CS emphasized that ministry success reflected the collective efforts, positioning MITI as pivotal in nation-building. "We bear a huge responsibility to make the nation work unlocking jobs through value addition and achieving self-sufficiency in consumables," the CS declared.
The CS regretted that the biggest challenge affecting optimal returns in trade was counterfeit products that corroded industry stability. The CS called on the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) and other agencies to "up their game," while lamenting lags in accreditation and property rights protection that leave Kenyan goods vulnerable.
The event drew pledges of unwavering support from SAGAs with Kenya National Accreditation Services (KENAS)Chair, who committing to ensuring SAGAs meet their targets. "We are fully committed, knowing exactly what we must do for the nation," the Chair stated, while stressing the importance of timely meeting notices.
Juliana Yako, Principal Administrative Secretary (PAS) from the Prime Cabinet Secretary's Office, hailed the initiative as a "noble assignment" for national government delivery. She urged state officers to back government efforts fully and cascade performance targets downward through their teams.
MITI boasted a solid track record, with fair performance in 2021/2022 financial year and strong 'good' results over the last three financial years. 
Scrap Metal Council (SMC) highlighted an opportunity in the 300 tonnes of copper produced locally, advocating for a domestic industry rather than exports. The CS also spotlighted untapped potential in the wood and furniture sectors, urging heads to spearhead Presidential directives.

Flanked by Principal Secretaries Regina Ombam (Trade) and Hassan Abubakar (Investments), the CS implored leaders to embrace their contracts wholeheartedly. "This will make Kenya self-sufficient, ensuring all our consumables are made locally."
The contracts signal MITI's commitment to transforming Kenya's industrial landscape amid growing economic pressures.
